April 21, 2014-Cartagena, Columbia

We opted to take a carriage ride to see the city of Cartagena. It was really fun but it was really hot and humid and our driver did not speak any English.

Local woman-the bowl with the bananas was amazing, she could walk fast and not spill.
Fort San Felipe was built by European military engineers so the Spanish could protect the walled city o of Cartagena, an important port for Spain's treasure fleets. There were numerous attempts to mount the fort but it was never penetrated.

Cartagena was a walled city at one time, the Spaniards built the wall to protect the citizens from French, English privateers and other pirates that frequently plundered the city. It took over 2 hundred years to build the 6+ miles around the city. Cartagena was a major trading port, especially for precious
metals and the trade of African slaves.

Quite a contrast from another view of the fort with modern day condominiums in front.
Near the end of the tour, the horse behind us would not keep his nose out of our business!

These leather hand bags were just gorgeous.
It was a fun day, but we were glad to see the ship again.
